Mike Macafferty over at slice of scifi, in response to the list making mania, offers his sarcastic take in “The Seven Most Embarrassing Moments in Science Fiction”.
Not to be outdone (and to make sure that you don’t have an excellent weekend) I offer my own list comprised of the Ten Wurstest Moments in Science Fiction History
1. Bye-bye Hugo Gernsback
2. Bye-bye Stanley G. Weinbaum
3. Bye-bye John W. Campbell
4. Bye-bye H. Beam Piper
5. Bye-bye Robert A. Heinlein
6. Bye-bye C. M Kornbluth
7. Bye-bye A. Bertram Chandler
8. Bye-bye Eric Frank Russell
9. Bye-bye Isaac Asimov
10. Bye-bye Arthur C. Clarke
You know, I NEVER liked this whole list thing to begin with…
Where does Frank Herbert stand on your list?
Fairly high. I have to say that of course Dune is excellent and it definately had a major impact on the genre, and its one of those novels that I re-read regularly.
A few of his other works are ok.
I don’t blame him for the movie version of Dune.
I limited myself to ten lost authors in this post; had it been longer, I’d have said ‘bye-bye Frank Herbert’ as well…
I’ve recently published a new 900-page biography about the life and times of Hugo Gernsback. It is available on Amazon. Just follow this link:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1419658573/ref=s9_asin_title_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0E2P5EPVT6GNP7TGPC29&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=320448601&pf_rd_i=507846
The manuscript was found while I was in the process of closing down Gernsback Publications Inc. in 2003. It was apparently written some time in the 1950’s. It covers all the areas that Hugo found interesting: wireless communications, science fiction, publishing, patents, foretelling the future, and much more.
I’ve been corresponding with Mr. Steckler and will be reviewing this book shortly.
Andre Alice Norton… A lot of us start on the path reading her books in our early years….
